Scarlett Johansson was born in New York City on November 22, 1984. She began acting as a child, and her role in the movie The Horse Whisperer earned critical acclaim at the age of 13. Her subsequent successes include Lost in Translation, Girl with a Pearl, The Earring, The Nanny Diaries, Vicky Cristina Barcelona and the mega hit The Avengers. Johansson also appeared in Hitchcock in 2012, a biopic of the famous horror director Alfred Hitchcock. Exploring his love for music, Johansson released his first album in 2008 with musician Pete Yorn. Johansson married Canadian actor Ryan Reynolds in September 2008, at a small ceremony in British Columbia, Canada. The couple bought a house in Los Angeles, but filed for divorce two years later, in December 2010.
After his separation from Reynolds, Johansson was romantically linked to actor Sean Penn for a while. The couple traveled to Mexico together and attended the wedding of actress Reese Witherspoon in March 2011.
In September 2011, Johansson found himself at the center of a scandal when the images of nudes taken on his cell phone were published online by hackers. The FBI initiated an investigation to find the individuals behind the leak.

Role in the 'The Horse Whisperer'
Johansson attracted critical attention with The Horse Whisperer of 1998, also starring Robert Redford and Kristin Scott Thomas. His portrayal of a young amputee won over many fans, including the star and the director of the film. Redford commented on Johansson's remarkable maturity, saying he was "13 years old at 30." In 2001, the actress received even more positive attention from critics with her supporting role at Ghost World, despite her lukewarm box office success.
Professional interruption: 'Lost in translation'
After graduating from PCS in 2002, Johansson soon found herself one of the best promising actresses in Hollywood. He had two leading roles in 2003, which garnered critical acclaim. In Lost in Translation, he played a woman who visited Tokyo and who has an unlikely relationship with a much older man (played by Bill Murray). Johansson also gave an impressive performance as a maid painted by the famous artist Johannes Vermeer (played by Colin Firth) in Girl with a Pearl Earring.

Around this time, Johansson expanded to new territory when he joined Pete Yorn for an album of duets, which were recorded in 2007. The couple finally launched their collaborative efforts in 2009 with the album Break Up, and Johansson wrote several tracks for recording. "I've been singing all my life, when I was a kid I wanted to be on Broadway," he told New York magazine. In 2008, Johansson released his first album, Anywhere I Lay My Head, with versions of songs by Tom Waits. The recording turned out to be a critical and commercial disappointment.
Johansson soon took on a new professional challenge. In 2009 he made his Broadway debut in a rebirth of Arthur Miller's drama, A View from the Bridge, opposite Liev Schrieber.
