"Nicki Minaj" is a stage name, a person adopted by the famous rapper. Onika Tanya Maraj was born on December 8, 1982 in Saint James, Trinidad and Tobago.
His father is Robert Maraj, who worked as a financial executive. His mother, Carol Maraj, was a forex accountant and gospel singer. She also has four brothers, brothers Brandon Lamar and Michaiah Maraj, and sisters Ming Maraj and Jelani Maraj.
His parents emigrated to the United States when Nicki was very young. She lived with her grandmother in Saint James until her mother called her and her brother when she was five years old.
His father was addicted to drugs and abusive, particularly towards his mother. He once set fire to the family home in an apparent and unsuccessful attempt to kill his mother.

He began his musical career by rapping in a quartet called "The Hoodstars", which included 7even Up, Lou $ tar and Scaff Breezy.

Minaj left "The Hoodstars" and uploaded much of her work on her Myspace profile page. This caught the attention of Fendi, CEO of 'Dirty Money Entertainment', who signed her for a 180-day contract in 2007.
He released his first mixtape, "Playtime is Over" on July 5, 2007, and released a follow-up titled "Sucka Free" in April of the following year.
On April 18, 2009, he released his third mixtape "Beam Me Up Scotty". The album included the hit song "I Get Crazy", which reached number 20 in the Hot Rap songs of the United States.
After capturing the attention of fellow rap artist Lil Wayne, Minaj signed a contract with his record label "Young Money Entertainment" in August 2009.
