He discovered acting while attending Modesto Junior College. Finally, when he moved to Los Angeles, Renner first got solid criticism for his role in the play Search and Destroy, which he also co-directed.

Making his film debut in 1995, Renner starred in the comedy National Lampoon's Senior Trip. Then he got some movies for television, like A Friend's Betrayal in 1996 and A Nightmare Come True in 1997. After numerous guest roles, Renner won a recurring role in Angel, playing a vampire in 1999. He also started working with a friend in buying and rebuilding homes in the Los Angeles area at this time to supplement their income.

Great opportunity
In 2002, Renner experienced his first professional breakthrough with the independent drama Dahmer. His fascinating portrayal of serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer earned him an Independent Spirit Award nomination for Best Male Leader and helped him secure an agent. "It made hearing a little easier to be a little more respected or at least known when you entered a room ... It was strange to be the new kid in the city that had been here for 10 years," Renner explained to Back Stage.

Continuing to offer solid performances, Renner worked on a variety of projects, from the big-budget action film S.W.A.T (2003) with Colin Farrell to the drama about sexual harassment North Country (2005) with Charlize Theron. He also starred in several independent films, such as Neo Ned (2005), in which he played a white supremacist who lived in a mental institution. Making something lighter, Renner played a condemned to death in the dark comedy Love Comes to the Executioner (2006).

'The Hurt Locker' and other projects
In 2007, Renner played a brave soldier in the thriller 28 weeks later. He soon played with another type of military officer in The Hurt Locker, which explored the travails of a team of Explosive Artillery Provisions (EOD) that works in Iraq. "The role was very rich and complex, and the EOD story made it so new and fresh, I trained with EOD for more than a year to accurately portray these guys, these heroes," Renner told USA Today.

Renner's efforts paid off handsomely, earning him praise for his convincing portrayal of Sergeant William James, an expert in deactivating bombs who appeared to be addicted to the adrenaline associated with his work. Directed by Kathryn Bigelow, The Hurt Locker won numerous awards nominations, including an Academy Award for Renner.

After the success of The Hurt Locker, Renner quickly became a Hollywood actor. He appeared in the crime drama The Town (2010) with Jon Hamm, Ben Affleck and Blake Lively.
